The pictures pretty much speak for themselves. These are stills taken from the animation feature entitled 'Prince Achmed' by Lotte Reiniger. This amazing animation uses only cutout silhouettes and yet effectively portrays complex emotions through the movement and interactions of the characters.

The aesthetic of Ipod commercials and Prince Achmed can be traced to shadow puppetry practiced by various cultures that predate modern cinema. The human silhouette is an iconic, universal symbol. It’s a powerful graphic tool, that is easy to construct, and therefore, often overused to sell products. Nevertheless, using silhouttes follows the adage that "less is more", and while at times trite, they can still be captivating.
